- The LAM Foundation conducts the first-ever Treatment Trial for LAM patients!
Thanks to the dedicated labors of our Scientific Board, the encouraging results of our initial pilot study, and the long-awaited approval from the National Institutes of Health, the global MILES Trial is about to begin! Click here for a summary of the trial.
Initial pilot study: A treatment trial for patients with LAM and tuberous sclerosis was conducted at the TS Clinic at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. The study was to determine if a drug called rapamycin has an effect on angiomyolipomas (benign kidney tumors), commonly found in TS and LAM patients. The first patient was enrolled early in May 2003. The treatment trial was funded by The LAM Foundation, The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, and the National Cancer Institute. Click here for an interview with Dr. McCormack regarding the Cincinnati rapamycin trial. Following that interview is an article about the trial that will be expanded to a worldwide treatment trial.

- Gene expression profiling of LAM lungs.
Gene expression profiling (Affimetrix) was performed on two non-microdissected LAM lung samples and compared to three normal lungs by Teresa Smolarek and Mark Geraci. For a gene to be included in the database, its expression had to be concordant between both LAM lungs and at least 1.8 fold different from all three normal lungs. The enclosed databases are for genes that are upregulated in LAM, with and without an antibody that enhances detection, and for genes that are downregulated in LAM, with and without the enhancing antibody. If you have questions, please contact Teresa Smolarek or Mark Geraci.
